Since the decline in hysterectomies over the last 20 decades, women today often think that when a hysterectomy is suggested by a gynaecologist that there is some surgical plot and will often seek a second opinion. Second opinions are always a good idea especially if a woman is doubtful of the indication for her surgery or does not have a relationship of trust with her gynaecologist. Hearing the opinion of someone else may be part of the process and journey necessary for a woman to part with that part of her body which has been imbibed with immense psychic value. Is the womb not the place where everyone wants to return to? Is it not the place of ultimate safety? If the woman’s worldview precludes surgical intervention, of course, she may “shop” at many (allopathic and non-allopathic) health practitioners until she hears what suits her headspace. The mind-body connect cannot be under-estimated and this process must be supported and encouraged, as long as the women’s life is not imminently at risk. If the pre-operation decision making, information gathering and this process is allowed to happen, the most important support post hysterectomy centres around practical support, like who picks up the kids as the necessary, nurturing infra-structure and support will have been put in place before the actual procedure.
