Calvinia is not just another emerging Karoo town stop and see for yourself! Make a pit stop at the Calvinia Museum and Tourist Office if you want to know how the towns folk live. Some travelers use the town as a halfway / overnight stop along the R27 route. City dwellers longing for the good old days spend a day or two hiking, sight-seeing or bird watching. The tourism season peaks during August and September when it is flower time! The Hantam mountain dominates the town of Calvinia, formerly known as Hantam. The first Dutch Reformed minister, ds N J Hofmeyr, suggested changing the name in honour of the Reformer John Calvin. Hantam is the Khoi word for the mountain where the red bulbs grow. The town was established in December 1847
