COMMED is an open medical aid scheme established in 1989. The scheme is registered with the Council for Medical Schemes and was initially registered as BOPMED to serve the former Bophuthatswana. BOPMED changed its name to Community Medical Aid Scheme (COMMED) in 1995 when all the homelands were integrated into the Republic of South Africa as part of the political transformation process. COMMED is an open medical aid scheme.
