In the second of the two-part series, “The making of a hunting ambassador”, Ron Thomson states that most people, including biological scientists, don’t understand the fact that nobody can “manage a species”. He explains the difference between home ranges and territories, with reference to rhinos and elephants – interesting reading for all hunters, especially those hunting in Big Five areas. Talking about “big” – Stefan Fouché and Christophe Roelofse went hunting, using a .500 Smith & Wesson with 300 gr FTX rounds and a .460 Smith & Wesson with 200 gr FTX rounds. On p 24–26 they explain that shooting a blesbuck up to a distance of 172 m with these handguns does not only take skill, but also a lot of practice.
