NuRa was established in 1999 in response to a call for proposals by the then Department of Minerals and Energy (now Department of Energy) for entities that would provide non-grid rural electrification. Having been selected as a partner by the Department of Energy (DoE) in the non-grid electrification programme in 1999, NuRa was awarded a concession area spanning District Municipalities; DC 25 to DC 28 in Northern Kwazulu Natal. NuRa started its operation to install and maintain solar home systems towards the end of 2001.
