MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AND POWER GENERATION NON BURN TECHNOLOGYMunicipal Waste Management in South AfricaDisposing of waste in South Africa involves dumping or burying municipal waste on identified dumping sites and this also remains a common practice in most African countries. A properly-designed and well-managed dumping site can be a relatively inexpensive method of disposing of waste materials. Poorly-designed or poorly-managed landfill can create a number of adverse environmental impacts such as wind-blown , attraction of , and generation of liquid . Another common byproduct of landfills is gas (mostly composed of and ), which is produced as organic waste breaks down . This gas can create odor problems, kill surface vegetation, and is a A 22 autoclave system will operate at a temperature of 160 degrees C, at 5.2 bar pressure and will effectively cook and prepare the waste material for ease of downstream separation where the equipment is presented with sterile clean recyclables. Well tried and tested robust separation equipment, similar to that employed in the metals recycling industry is utilised. A combination Dryer – Pyroliser - Oxidation unit provides energy to fire a 12 boiler system, each boiler being capable of producing 12½ tonnes of steam at the required temperature and pressure. These boilers provide steam to drive the turbine, nominally rated at 5mW per boiler. The steam required for the autoclave process is delivered by the hot gas boiler, thus eliminating the need for an alternative fuel source once the plant is operating at steady state conditions. 65mW of the 75mW power produced by the plant is available for export to the National Grid. This amount of electricity is generated by using 2800tons of Municipal waste per day. This can increase by increasing the size of the plant.
