Description/Remarks
J&P Lightning was established in 1994. We specialize in the manufacturing and installation of Lightning Masts, for Thatch Structures and Lapas. We also do manufacturing and installation of Flag Poles. We specialize nationwide in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of lightning conductors for the protection of thatched roofs according to SABS Standards 0313:1999 and the Code of Practice: SABS IEC 1024. SABS certificates are issued upon installation or maintenance of the lightning protection systems for structural insurance purposes. The installation of masts (poles) to protect thatched roofs is use to reduce inherent dangers of the risks due to lightning flashes. The ageing of the thatch is often covered with loose fibres (e.g. grass) which are easily ignitable! In the event of possible damp thatches, flammable gasses can also be involved. The presence of metals in or on the thatch, reinforced concrete structures, could give rise to sparking inside the thatch, with a resulting fire risk. Lightning will take the shortest route with the least amount of resistance. The lightning mast is earthed with a low resistance so that the lightning bolt will rather strike the mast than your house. A Lightning mast must be located at least one meter away from the thatched roofed structure. This will avoid the flash-side that can occur between the mast and the metal object in the structure.
