Econo Transport is a specialised international shipping company provides all kind of domestic, commercial removal services. Based in Cape Town, South Africa.

The shipping container turned 61 years old this year! Here are some interesting facts you may not have known. Did you know: 1. The first metal shipping container was invented in 1956 by the American Malcolm McLean (he was awarded ‘Man Of The Century’ by the International Maritime Hall of Fame). 2. In 1956, Ideal X became the world’s first container vessel and set sail carrying 58 containers from New York to Houston. 3. In 1966, around 1% of countries had container ports. This rose to 90% by 1983. 4. On the 01st July 1977, Safmarine’s freighter SA Morgenster came alongside the semi-completed container terminal in Cape Town to discharge South Africa’s first ever containerized cargo (1x 20’ container). 5. As you read this, there are currently over 17 million shipping containers travelling across our oceans. 6. Approximately 97% of all shipping containers are manufactured in China. 7. It estimated that an average of 10,000 shipping container get lost in our seas every year. That’s pretty much one container every hour. (So yes, insurance cover is necessary). 8. If shipping containers are taken care of with regular maintenance, they can last for more than 20 years. 9. A standard TEU container can hold around 3,500 shoe boxes, and a 40ft high cube can hold more than 8,000 shoe boxes (Ladies have to have them shoes J). 10. If all the containers in the world were laid end-to-end, they would go around the world more than twice. 11. The Freitag store in Zurich is the tallest shipping container building in the world and uses 19 containers, with nine of them being stacked on top of one another. The result is a building that is 26 metres tall made only out of containers! 12. In 2011, a Bangladeshi man called Din Islam was feeling tired and decided to sleep inside a container during a twelve hour shift in Chittagong. When he woke up, he discovered the container was actually aboard a ship! He spent nine days with nothing to eat or drink while stuck in the container. He was eventually set free when he was heard banging on the side of the container in Singapore Terminal (he’s lucky it didn’t transship!) 13. Sending a container across the world by ship often emits less greenhouse gas emissions than getting it from the port to its final destination. 14. Customs only check around two to ten percent of all containers that are shipped internationally worldwide. 15. Every single shipping container has it’s own unique ID number. 16. The busiest port in the world, Shanghai, handles more than 29 million shipping containers in one year. 17. A cat from China to USA once survived more than 2 weeks trapped in a container without any food or water (This is actually fairly common). 18. If the seas get rough and containers go overboard, a 20-foot cargo container can float for about 50 days, but a 40-foot shipping container can float three times that. 19. Before containerization, it would take around a week to unload and load each vessel. And finally… 20.The first ever High-Cube reefer to arrive in Cape Town was brought in by none other than… Evergreen Line!
