The fact that the art of bonsai was limited to the noble class almost caused the art to die out in Japan It is widely accepted that it was the Chinese who first created the miniature landscapes and trees that we now know as bonsai

Bonsai is derived from two words, "Bon", meaning tray, and "Sai" meaning growing or planting. Therefore, the two words put together give you the translation of "growing in tray" or "tray planting".
