A hand therapist is a qualified therapist - most commonly an occupational therapist with some post graduate qualification in this specialised area of occupational therapy. Hand and upper limb therapists only treat conditions affecting the area from the shoulder to the finger tips. They are able to evaluate and assess a condition or disease process, make differential diagnoses and devise treatment plans. They work in close contact with upper limb surgeons and receive many of their patients from this referral source. Patients are seen either pre- or post - operatively or as an alternative to surgery in order to regain functional use of the hand. The main aim of a hand therapist is to restore function and allow the individual to resume all prior activities including work, sports, hobbies and all areas of personal management. You need hand therapy if: you have undergone surgery for: fractures (broken bone) - screws, plates or wires inserted to stabilise the fracture, tendon injuries
