Autism is a lifelong, complex and often devastating disability that is considered to affect 1 in every 150 children born. This means that there must be over 270 000 people with autism in South Africa and a predicted 5000 new cases per year.Autism affects the development and functioning of the brain and thus affects the way in which our children and adults are able to process information. In addition, their sensory perception tends to be more acute that ours thus meaning that daily lives can be a bombardment of painful stimuli from which they cannot escape.Autism South Africa, as the recognised national body, does it utmost to enhance the awareness, understanding and prompt detection of this disability, as well as facilitate affordable and accessible services around the country.
